I need to give back more than I am taking

21 Jun 2012 - 1 Comment

I was having breakfast with my great friend Patrick Foley catching up after a few weeks between our “weekly” meal. Patrick always brings something to me regarding work, career and/or life. We discussed a lot of things but one thing stuck with me. I will reference his blog post here but his message is to give more than you take. That means everything…

  • Your spouse/partner
  • Your kids
  • Your family
  • Your job
  • Your career (see how I separated it from your job?)
  • Your co-workers
  • Your community

I am writing this post about my taking of the community. I have to admit that I have been taking more from the Community than I have given lately. We all go through ebbs and flows where we take more or give more. I just realized that I have also been acting like I give more also which is not right. I am a great person to create a list of things I want to do and the list is quite long. Can I do everything? Maybe not but I can do more and be humble when I do them.

I have received so much in the past 8 years I have been active in this Community… I have no clear idea what that means anymore but just call it that. I think it is time to give a lot more.

Thank you to my friends and acquaintances that give me a laugh, insight or smack across the head. You change me and that is good.

Gotta question you about your view on yourself.

You’re continually giving back by helping others, speaking, podcasting (or whatever it is you call dfb), keeping keith well behaved, et al.

But you are almost always in a giveback mode. A friend of mine once said he drew a very hard line. You have to classify someone as a giver or a taker. And then you know how to deal accordingly. My personal take, when it comes to “the woody”, you’re well over the line of giver versus taker. Don’t underrate yourself!
